Sensor Worked at First, Then Stopped
Sensor Worked at First, Then Stopped
Overview
If a TankMaster sensor worked correctly at first and then stopped responding,
this is almost always caused by a physical mounting or adhesion issue.
In most cases, the sensor itself is functioning normally.
Common Symptoms
- Sensor initially reported correctly, then stopped triggering
- Tank reading no longer changes as expected
- One sensor (S1–S4) appears stuck or inactive
- Readings became unstable after driving
Why This Happens
1. Adhesive Loosened Over Time
Heat, vibration, humidity, or surface contamination can cause adhesive
to slowly release, even if the sensor appeared secure at first.
2. Sensor Shifted Slightly
Even a small shift or tilt can introduce an air gap between the sensor
and the tank wall, disrupting detection.
3. Dirty or Uneven Tank Surface
Residue left on the tank wall can allow gradual adhesive failure.
4. Sensitivity Was Increased to Compensate
Raising sensitivity may temporarily mask a mounting problem,
but the issue usually returns.
What This Is Not
- Not a firmware failure
- Not a Bluetooth connection issue
- Not normal sensor aging
How to Fix It
Step 1: Inspect the Sensor
- Check that the sensor is fully flush against the tank
- Look for lifted edges or loose corners
- Confirm the sensor has not slid downward
Step 2: Remove the Sensor Completely
Do not attempt to press a loose sensor back into place.
- Carefully remove the sensor
- Remove all old adhesive from the sensor
- Clean the tank surface thoroughly
- Use isopropyl alcohol for final cleaning
- Allow surfaces to dry completely
Step 3: Remount with Fresh Adhesive
- Apply new high-quality double-sided tape
- Ensure full coverage on the sensor face
- Press firmly for 20–30 seconds
- Do not reposition once mounted
Step 4: Reset Sensitivity (If Needed)
- Return sensitivity to default
- Adjust gradually only if required
- Observe behavior during normal tank use
Special Notes for Black Tanks
- Black tanks experience more vibration
- Walls are often thicker
- Adhesive quality is especially critical
Preventing This in the Future
- Always clean tank surfaces thoroughly
- Use high-quality automotive or VHB tape
- Apply firm, even pressure during installation
- Avoid adjusting sensitivity to mask mounting issues
If the Sensor Still Does Not Respond
After remounting and verifying sensitivity:
- Check the sensor cable connection
- Verify the correct sensor number (S1–S4) in the app
- Power-cycle the TankMaster
